Kate Lynch - Craft - Somerset Portraits and Voices
Kate Lynch is an artist and social historian. For her recent project Craft- Somerset Portraits and Voices she spent two years in the workshops of thirty traditional Somerset craftspeople making drawings and paintings and collecting their stories.
The result is a full colour hard back book with her charcoal drawings and paintings and the words of the artisans. All the crafts featured are ancient - blacksmiths, hedgelayers, basketmakers, thatchers, horsehair weavers and hand-made papermakers. There is also a riddlemaker, brushmaker, bell ropemaker, dry stone waller. horse collar maker and more.
Kate will illustrate her talk with her pictures, introducing the people she has met and sharing some of the old vocabulary they use. Kate has previously documented shepherds, farmers and beekeepers. She says that her documentary work is like time-travelling, witnessing the unbroken connection with the past in the crafts and seeing how people are bringing hand-craftsmanship into our modern digital age as their livelihoods, not as history.
