This month, the piano is being played by local pianist, Sam O’Neal, who is also Lead Pianist for our Octagon Junior Choir.
Sam O’Neal started learning the piano at the age of 8. In 2015, following a masterclass at his state school, he was invited by the concert pianist Richard Meyrick to become a Pianoman scholar, and over the following 3 years he had tuition from professional pianists and chamber musicians and took part in numerous residential courses, masterclasses, recitals and ensemble performances. He was a finalist in the Elmbridge Young Musician of the Year and a concerto soloist at the Royal College of Music while still at school. Sam studied music at Cambridge University, where he was an Instrumental Award holder, a choral scholar, accompanist, chamber musician and recitalist, winning numerous prizes including one as the outstanding contributor to college musical life in his year. Since graduating he has been invited back to the University as a recitalist and is currently working as part of the music department at Sherborne Prep School, teaching, running choir rehearsals and directing ensembles including the String Orchestra.
